Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

They’re the same diamond — here’s the honest difference in origin, price, and how to choose.

6 min read

If you’re shopping for an engagement ring in 2026, the first question is almost always the same: lab-grown or natural? The short answer is that both are real diamonds — the difference is where they came from, and what that does to the price.

What “lab-grown” actually means

A lab-grown diamond is created in a matter of weeks using one of two processes — High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) — that recreate the conditions under which diamonds form. The result is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond: the same pure-carbon crystal, the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the same fire and brilliance. Gemologists grade them on the same scale, and the same labs (IGI and GIA) certify them.

The real difference: origin and price

A natural diamond formed over a billion years deep in the earth. That rarity, and the long supply chain behind it, is what you pay for. A lab diamond skips the mining, so for the same budget you can typically get a stone that is larger, cleaner, and better-cut — often a full carat or two more for the same money.

  • Choose lab-grown if you want maximum size and quality for the budget, prefer a traceable origin, and aren’t focused on resale.
  • Choose natural if the billion-year origin story matters to you, or you value the established resale tradition.

Will anyone be able to tell?

No. Without specialized equipment, a lab diamond and a natural diamond are indistinguishable — including to a jeweler’s loupe. What people actually notice is the cut, because cut quality (not origin) is what makes a diamond sparkle. We select Excellent and Ideal cuts precisely for that reason.

Certification matters either way

Whichever you choose, insist on an IGI certificate and a laser-inscribed report number you can verify. Every Viviour center stone ships certified. When you’re ready, our lab-diamond engagement rings are in stock and ship fully insured in 3–7 business days — or design one from scratch in the ring builder.
